Elf on the Shelf
The elf was old, and feeling quite sad
He thought of past days, the fun that he’d had
Those days now were gone, he felt really glum
To get back his laughter, he needed a chum.
As he was sitting, and brooding alone
A human out walking, there passed by his home
‘Hello, my name’s Herbert’, said human to elf.
‘Why sit there so gloomy, alone by yourself?’
Said Elf, ‘I am lonely, alone and all chilly
Because of my clothes, for folk think them silly’.
Said Herbert, ‘My friend, you listen to me
Wear your best outfit, and come home to tea.’
‘I will,’ said the elf, but you dress that way too
If you consent, then I’ll come for a brew’.
Herbert agreed, and said with a smile,
‘O.K. I will match you, just for a while’.
The elf for the visit, then chose a green smock
With pink frilly trousers, and red woollen socks.
Black shoes with gold buckles, that looked really neat
The points of them curling, at end of his feet.
When he was walking, twas easy to tell
At point of each shoe, there tinkled a bell.
His insides were laughing, though face was a mask
To dress that way also, was Herbert’s next task.
Mission accomplished, they looked just like twins
Feeling quite tickled, they wore cheesy grins.
Said elf then to Herbert,’ Is there a chance
You’ll copy my actions, and join in a dance?’
Said Herbert,’ Of course’, and they both danced around
They liked it so much, that they fell to the ground
Roaring with laughter, and full of delight
All of elf’s sadness ,put now to flight.
Of tea they drank gallons, and talked on for hours
Said elf, ‘I can stay here, and hide in your flowers’
Retired to the garden, and made it his home
Now people who see him, they think him a gnome.
